January 15, 2011 – No Math Circle – MLK Weekend
January 22, 2011 – Dr. Dimitar Grantcharov – “Some Interesting AMC and AIME Problems”
January 29, 2011 – Dr. Branislav Kisačanin – “Important points in a triangle: centroid, orthocenter, incenter, circumcenter, …”
February 5, 2011 – No Math Circle
We will not be holding the Metroplex Math Circle this weekend so our participants can compete at the UT Arlington Calculus Bowl and Dr. Dimitar Grantcharov’s Second Annual UT Arlington Math Competiton.
February 12, 2011 – No Math Circle
February 19, 2011 – Radu Sorici – “Algebraic Inequalities”
February 26, 2011 – Dr. Branislav Kisačanin – “Geometry of Triangles”
In this talk about geometry of triangles we will see two different proofs of Stewart’s theorem, derive formulas for important cevians, and solve several interesting geometric problems. We will also look at other important points in triangles (Fermat point, centers of excircles, …) and look at the Euler line, the nine-point circle, and related problems.
March 5, 2011 – Dr. Titu Andreescu – “AIME is Coming Up Soon!”
March 12, 2011 – Dr. Titu Andreescu – “AIME is Practically Here!”
March 19, 2011 – No Math Circle – UTD Spring Break
March 26, 2011 – No Math Circle
April 2, 2011 – David Cordeiro – “LaTeX Tutorial and Resources Beyond Math Circles!”
LaTeX is the typesetting markup language used by mathematicians and scientists to format mathematical and scientific expressions. Learning LaTeX is easy and fun for even elementary school students and it allows older students to write up science fair presentations and mathematical proofs like the pros. While the students work on problems to develop their LaTeX skills, parents and students who have already mastered LaTeX are encouraged to attend to learn about resources that build upon what is being taught in Metroplex Math Circle. Competitions, online resources and advice on preparing for college admissions will all be discussed.
Metroplex Math Circle has completed its Spring 2011 season. Join us again in the fall for another great series of speakers! To be notified when our lectures begin again please join our Yahoo Group or our Facebook page.
Fall 2010
September 18, 2010 – Dr. Branislav Kisačanin – “Analysis of Number Sequences”
In this lecture we will hear about important sequences of numbers (triangular numbers, Fibonacci numbers, binomial coefficients, prime numbers, perfect numbers, …), methods to discover their properties, and still unsolved problems related to some of them.
September 25, 2010 – Dr. Mirroslav Yotov – “Linear Perspective or How Geometry Helps in Drawing Realistic Pictures”
Have you ever had troubles in drawing a picture and making the painting look natural? Well, I have! And now I know that simple rules from Geometry can help resolve this problem. It was actually the great painters of Renaissances who developed the part of Geometry, called Projective Geometry, in order to put an order in the painting process! Many masterpieces in visual arts, including movies, were made following these rules. I will share with you my excitement of what I know from Geometry, and how it is applied to the visual arts. The presentation will be accessible to people who know about straight lines, circles, planes, and spheres.
October 2, 2010 – Radu Sorici – “The Mathematics of Magic Squares”
Radu Sorici is a senior at UTD with a double major: Mathematics and Computer Science. He has been a participant in the international math competitions. Radu works closely with Dr. Andreescu on several projects, including AwesomeMath and the online journal Mathematical Reflections.
October 9, 2010 – Dr. Josh Nichols-Barrer – “Number Theory Done Right”
As you know, each positive integer may be factored uniquely into a product of powers of primes. Do you know why? In this class we will look at the structure of the integers in the simplest terms, and use that for a foundation from which we might actually prove that what we know to be true actually is. In the first half we will recall some things about arithmetic that we know intuitively and can name (with maybe a surprise or two), and in the second half we will proceed to prove (along with some other things which are no less key) unique prime factorization in the integers.
October 16, 2010 – Dr. Branislav Kisačanin – “Mathematical Proofs”
October 23, 2010 – Dr. Titu Andreescu – “AMC 8 Preparation”
Dr. Andreescu will share many of his favorite problems and best tips for success in the upcoming AMC 8 contest. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to study with the former director of the AMC and former coach of the US International Mathematical Olympiad team.
October 30, 2010 – Dr. Titu Andreescu – “AMC 8 Preparation Continued”
Dr. Andreescu will share many of his favorite problems and best tips for success in the upcoming AMC 8 contest. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to study with the former director of the AMC and former coach of the US International Mathematical Olympiad team.
November 6, 2010 – No Metroplex Math Circle
November 13, 2010 – MEANT Math Olympiad
As in past years we will not have our regular math circle so students can participate in the annual problem solving contest sponsored by the Malayalee Engineers Association of North Texas.
November 20, 2010 – Dr. Razvan Gelca – “Regular Polygons”
Surprising properties, constructions and applications to Mathematical Olympiad Problems.
November 27, 2010 – No Metroplex Math Circle
December 4, 2010 – Dr. Carol Reynolds – “Music and Numbers”
Music and numbers? How interrelated are they? Everyone knows about rhythm and counting 1-2-3-4. And you probably know that math figures into music theory, (primarily the study of harmony and form). But what about acoustics, the science of sound? And music notation (the historical systems for writing music down on paper)? How about the composition itself? Could numbers be a factor?
Using sound and visual images, Dr. Reynolds will travel through the many ways that numbers, math, and symbols occur in music, both in today’s practice, and in musical systems of the past.

I would love to come to your Math in the Metroplex Circle Club. When is the next meeting?
Metroplex Math Circle will begin again in January 2011. Come back to this website for announcements or join our E-mail list.

Dear there,
I wonder if my son (4th grader) can take this class. He likes to attend this kind of mathematical learning and activities.
Thanks for your response.
KJ
KJ, your son will not be the only 4th grader attending. The program is intended to be challenging for all students and it is a good thing to go home not yet mastering 100% of the content (which is certainly more like life beyond traditional schools).
I’m trying to find a summer camp with a math emphasis for my son who will be in 4th grade in the fall. I was wondering if there was a page somewhere which lists that type of resource. Thank you,
Jennifer McEachern
@Jennifer, if you do a search on “summer camps” on this site you will find that we profiled many of the most popular ones including Dr. Andreescu’s AwesomeMath. These camps generally target older kids but exceptional younger students have sometimes been admitted.
Are you looking for an overnight camp of these types or were you looking for more of a day camp in the Dallas area? Texas Mathworks could be a good fit and I believe they accommodate K-12:

I am looking for a math program for my 12 years old boy, he loves math. He just came to US last month, so he speaks limited English, but he is reading pre-caculus now. It will be great help if there is some math program for him to get involved, it will definitely benifits him on Learning English. We live in Houston area, however, most of the math program are out of Houston. I was wondering if there was some program in Houston, otherwise we have to drive a long way to those program. Thanks.
